Antique Brass National Cash Registers Info Brass National Cash Registers This is THE place to go to find out info on your ornate antique cash register!! I started collecting brass National Cash Registers because I am an engineer and enjoy things mechanical. I also enjoy the beauty of a restored brass register with their Tiffany styled cases. These mechanical marvels and their plain metal successors are a tribute the ingenuity and skill of their creators.
Not many examples of this intricate mechanical era are still available on the antiques market. I have been collecting National Cash Registers since 1990 and have acquired a very respectable sample of interesting machines. Below are a few pictures. The 3 machines in the foreground include model #2, #50.25 and #8 with clock. Ok folks, here it is 12 pages on everything you need to know about your ornate National Cash Register. Plate showing an NCR Serial Number The model # is generally a 1,2,3 or 4 digit number on a brass tag on the front of the machine. Close by should be the serial #; it is a 5 or more digit number generally in the 100,000ās or millions.
A serial number with an āSā in front means the register was reworked and resold by NCR. The original serial number can often be found inside the machine if desired. See note below. Model and serial #ās can also be found on the paper label under the drawer. If the number on the front of the machine do not match the label numbers it may mean the drawer has been replaced.
Modern point-of-sale systems might be sleek and vast, but the cash registers of early commerce evoke nostalgia through tactile experiences, sounds, smells, and craftsmanship. An antique or vintage National Cash Register makes an attractive decoration or, in the case of operational models, a quaint and simple way to conduct transactions with customers. The oldest models date back to the late 1800s, and most can be dated based on their model numbers.

Because of the long history of the National Cash Register company and its products, many people have their registers restored to working order, especially when simple National Cash Register parts need replacing, such as individual keys or clasps on the cash drawer. These registers are extremely heavy, so they require a sturdy support underneath them, such as a counter or table. For many models, universal keys can be found if the original is no longer with the unit, and the vast inventory of official NCR products from sellers on eBay ensures that you can always find accessories to go with your register, from receipt spikes to ornate drawer plates. Some National cash registers have model numbers, while others have a combination of letters and numbers that reveal additional information about the register's features. For example, as of May 2015, the number 211 indicates that the register's model number is 211. A register with model code 572-EL-9 is a model 572 with an electric motor and nine drawers.
Other letters frequently appear in National cash register model codes. 'L' indicates that the register has electric lights, and 'F' indicates a large register that stands on the floor.

Registers marked 'C' are cabinet-style models, and those marked 'G' have autographic printers. National cash registers produced before 1909 have model numbers only. Those produced after 1909 have serial numbers printed above the model information. Serial numbers are linked to the year the register left the factory but are unrelated to the model numbers. Serial numbers preceded by the letter 'S' indicate that the register was sent back to the factory after initial shipping. These serial numbers reveal the month and year the register was shipped out for the final time. They contain no information about the original shipping date.
